As maize is an essential food product in the Indian Ocean region, the promotion of the maize regional value-chain plan is a priority for regional actors and a priority product to achieve maritime connectivity.
International Economics (IEC), through the Africa RISE programme, is leading a study on maize value chain to support the development process of the regional maize value chain plan, including the structuring of reliable data and statistics.
Given the challenges of food self-sufficiency for the region’s poultry sector, maize is a priority product for Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) region.
This study will:
– Identify the mechanisms (legal, regulatory, administrative, and institutional reform, fiscality measures, maritime transport system, data and statistics architecture) that would support the development of the maize value chain;
– Develop capacities in the development of the regional maize value chain plan; and
– Facilitate the multi-actor regional dialogue process in the development of the maize regional value chain plan.
Through this study, the team hopes to enable the promotion of the regional maize value chain plan for the SWIO region to seize the ongoing opportunities in the context of improving maritime connectivity.
