Strengthening the National Trade Information System and Competitiveness of Mauritania

The Project at A Glance

International Economics supported Mauritiania in the development and operationalisation of their National Trade Information System, including developing the portal, and updating and uploading all information in support of an effective business information system, as well as provided capacity building on the adoption of international standards (ISO) in order to ensure improved quality of national products for export.

What We Found

Mauritania is a predominantly desert country with abundant natural resources (iron, gold and copper ores and oil) which give it significant potential, with relative macroeconomic stability and an annual economic growth rate of 3% estimated in 2018.

The ultimate goal of this project was to contribute to the sustainable economic development of Mauritania and reduce the incidence of poverty in the country by strengthening Mauritania’s Trade Information System and support the country’s international competitiveness. Specifically, our Team provided necessary support in operationalising the National Trade Information System, and assisting with the adoption of international standards for the improved quality of national products for export.

Our Strategy and Impact

Our Team has set up an operational National Trade Information System focusing on the experience of similar cases in the region, while highlighting the particularities of Mauritania. Furthermore, they contributed to adoption of standards, placing a particular emphasis on the question of the international acceptance of Mauritanian products throughout the project.

To secure a sustainability, a training sessions were conducted with members of national institutions and laboratories to build their knowledge and strengthen their capacity in ISO norms and metrological dimensions.
